As anyone who has organised an Asian wedding before knows, it’s a lot of hard work with an infinite amount of detail to consider. If you’re a first-timer, it’s an even more daunting prospect! To help you get started, here’s a top 10 checklist of a few key elements to keep in mind.

Invitations: Invitations must be sent out in plenty of time, so that your guests can RSVP and you can finalise your table plan without a last minute panic!

Speakers: If you’re planning on having speeches, let the speakers know in good time. There is nothing worse than not giving them enough time to prepare, and having a speech go down like a lead balloon!

Budget: For a lucky few of us, budget is of no concern, but for the vast majority, this is often the most complicated part of organising a wedding. Split your budget according to venue, catering, decoration (includes flowers), invitations, honeymoon etc and make sure you don’t exceed your total figure.

Decor: You can either organise your own decorations (particularly for any functions being held at home), or you can hire someone to do the decorations for you. The sky is often the limit when it comes to theming an event, so be realistic and only do what you can afford! Make sure you book everything in advance, particularly if your event falls in the summer months.

Venue: For a perfect event, you need a perfect venue, so take your time and consider your options carefully. The location of the venue in particular is key – will it be easy for guests to find? Does it have ample parking? Does it have disabled facilities? Can they cope with your numbers? What is their hire charge? Are there any hidden extras? Make sure you get answers to all these questions before booking.

Catering: The food is usually the most memorable aspect of a wedding. Choose your catering company carefully, ensuring that the food and service are of a high quality. You don’t want anything going wrong on your big day!

Photographer/videographer: For the bride and groom, the wedding day is usually one big blur. It’s therefore crucial to have the right photographer and videographer to capture your special moments. Speak to your venue or your caterer, as often they can recommend someone reputable. Research your options thoroughly and ensure you see examples of their work before going ahead and booking. If your wedding falls in the summer months, make sure you book in advance so that you’re not stuck with your second or third option.

Music: Along with food, music will make or break your event. Speak to your venue or caterer as they can recommend DJs they work with on a regular basis.

Honeymoon: After all the chaos of the wedding, this is an opportunity for the bride and groom to finally kick back and relax. Organise your honeymoon well in advance so that when the big day comes, you know that white sand beaches and an abundance of sunshine are just round the corner!

Cake: The cake often forms the centrepiece of the room when your guests are arriving. Do your research and make sure you get plenty of tastings in to choose a cake that both you and your guests will enjoy. Remember, your caterer will be providing you with dessert, so it’s not always necessary to go for the eight-tier all singing all dancing cake extravaganza!
